What you need to know
How does endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty work?
Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure that uses endoscopic suturing. This happens from inside the stomach to reduce the size of the stomach by about 70%. It’s a nonsurgical alternative to gastric sleeve surgery and similar bariatric surgery procedures.
You can feel full with less food, absorb fewer calories and lose weight over time.
Why choose endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty?
For the right candidate, ESG may be a less invasive alternative to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Both procedures reduce the stomach size, but the surgical approach does so by removing part of the stomach, while ESG uses stitches to bring folds of the stomach together like an accordion.
What to expect with endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty?
You should expect to undergo the same medical and psychological preparation as a surgical patient but with the added benefit of fewer complications and a faster recovery. After the 60-to-90-minute procedure, you will return home the same day and maintain approximately 15% weight loss after 5 years.
