Nicholas John Shea, MD

Dr. Nicholas J. Shea performs procedures in all areas of adult cardiac surgery. He has particular interest in total arterial coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), the use of mechanical support for high risk cardiovascular procedures, and mitral valve disorders. He also has extensive training in the management of aortic aneurysms and valve-sparing techniques for aortic root disease, and treats patients in the Atlantic Aortic Center.

Dr. Shea cares for his patients holistically, recognizing each patient’s unique story and needs. He believes in the value of personalized care and attention, from a patient’s first office visit through their entire hospital stay and follow up. He focuses his practice on ensuring patients have a full understanding of their disease while offering solutions that utilize state of the art techniques.

Dr. Shea earned his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, where he studied mathematics and economics. He received his medical doctorate degree from Columbia University and also holds a master of science in biomedical engineering from Columbia University. Dr. Shea completed training in cardiothoracic surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, where he gained particular experience in valve repair, mechanical support techniques to support high risk and complex operations, and the treatment and management of aortic disease.

He has published extensively on surgical management of aortic disease, heart failure, surgical innovation, and structural valve disease. He’s a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Heart Association, the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, and the New York Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Outside of his clinical practice, Dr. Shea has interests in quality improvement and surgical innovation.
